Born in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Finidi played for Calabar Rovers, Iwuanyanwu Nationale (now Heartland) and Sharks.

Finidi joined Dutch giants Ajax Amsterdam in 1993 and scored 18 goals after 85 appearances before departing for Real Betis in 1996.

During his time at Ajax he won the Eredivisie title, Johan Cruyff Shield, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Super Cup and the now defunct Intercontinental Cup.

He also featured for Ipswich Town in the Premier League and Mallorca in the LaLiga.

He made his Super Eagles debut in 1991, in a 1992 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against
Burkina Faso, providing three assists for
Rashidi Yekini and scoring once in a 7–1 rout.

He was part of the Eagles squad that won the 1994 AFCON and also achieved one second (Ghana/Nigeria 2000) and two third-place finishes (Senegal 1992, Mali 2002).

Also, he made the squad to the USA 1994 and France 1998 World Cups, scoring in the former.
